MELISSA NAU, M.D.

Dr. Nau's primary professional role is that of Fellow in Psychiatry and the Law at the University of California at San Francisco. In this capacity, Dr. Nau practices in both the civil and criminal areas of forensic psychiatry. She serves private clients as well as the legal systems of San Mateo County and San Quentin prison. As a fellow, training includes but is not limited to specific cases with respect to occupational medicine, sexually violent offenses, insanity, competency, fitness for duty, child and family law, and addiction. During the fellowship Dr. Nau's primary role is that of evaluator, however she additionally functions in a clinical role at San Quentin prison.

Dr. Nau received an undergraduate degree in International Relations, Law and Organization from Georgetown University and a medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. Prior to her participation in the fellowship in Psychiatry and the Law, Dr. Nau completed her residency in Psychiatry at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute of the University of California at San Francisco.

Dr. Nau has written a publication on the topic of legal issues related to psychosis in pregnancy and has pursued numerous research and creative activities related to women's mental health, psychopharmacology, teaching, education, and mental health in developing countries.
